The Horrible Plan of Horace Pickle Brian Hagan Books

I expected a mindless comedy where logic was thrown out in favor of funny jokes and ideas. Surprisingly I found a book that was actually written very well. If it wasn't about an evil plan to destroy all mashed potatoes on the planet, a stuffy college professor might even approve of it. While the general premise is downright bizarre, it's taken totally seriously by the author and executed as it would in reality. Don't get me wrong, it's still hilarious and weird.

And for a book where the writer is limited only be his imagination, it almost seems like it was written with the budget of an indie movie in mind. It's a superhero vs. supervillain story, but there are no costumes or superpowers or giant monsters. And there are only like four characters aside from a few nameless security guards. Aside from a setpiece at the end of each of the book's 3 acts, there isn't a lot of action. It's more like Death Note than Iron Man, a detective against a madman fighting with their minds, not their claws or fireballs.

Horace Pickle is a ridiculously silly book that is taken even more ridiculously seriously. It's short and doesn't tell a massive blockbuster sized story, but that honestly helps in standout among superhero tales with dozens of people flying around and shooting lasers at robots. Besides, you gotta save that for the sequel.

The Horrible Plan of Horace Pickle Brian Hagan Books Reviews

A villain wanting to rid the world of Mashed Potatoes seems silly and somewhat corny, but you'll be surprised what a great story it turned out to be.

This book surprised me. I'm always a little leery of self published stories but this one kept me interested the whole time, even when there wasn't any serious action for several chapters. I liked the various characters who were introduced throughout the plot and the main "hero" was unique and interesting when the chapters came back to his point of view.

I hope I get to read the further adventures of the characters in the future.

As a librarian, I see a lot of books. As a comic book fan, I've read my fair share of superhero novels, graphic and otherwise. After a while, you can start to see the patterns within a superhero story and know exactly how it's going to end.

I can honestly say that The Horrible Plan of Horace Pickle was NOT one of these typical works.

August Munch, our sidekick that is protecting his city while his boss, Baron, is on vacation, is not your typical hero. He doesn't fly, he doesn't have super strength, lacks the confidence of the members of Justice League, and while he has some fun gadgets, he's no Batman or Iron Man. His superpower is...well, I won't spoil it, because it is a rather fun and well-timed surprise!
Our villain, Horace Pickle, also doesn't have typical super powers, nor is he out for world domination, human enslavement, or even massive wealth. What he's after, and how he intends to get it, is also a surprise, and a rather fun one!

What happens when these two original characters go head-to-head?

You'll just have to read to find out! Seriously, it is just too great, too hilarious, and you will have to read it to believe it!

The Horrible Plan of Horace Pickle is a short, fast paced, well detailed story that pokes fun at the tropes of superhero stories while being one. We see an original cast of characters, heroic and otherwise, a dastardly plan set into motion, and how a sidekick can step up and become the greatest hero possible.

While the work is well done, there are a few minor editing problems I noticed (again, librarian), but they didn't detract from the work. The book may be too short for some audiences (especially those of us that want to see more about the world), but is a great first step for a new series. As a first novel from a new author, I can say this book is well written, well planned, and has the makings of a great beginning to a worthwhile series!

The Horrible Plan of Horace Pickle is a relatively short read (I finished it in two hours) and is ideal for Young Adult audiences due to pacing, language, and themes. I plan on purchasing a copy for the library I work for in order to use it for 2015's summer reading program on heroes.

If you like superheroes, enjoy a good laugh, and wish there was something NEW out there, you should read this book! I can assure you that you won't regret it!
Loved it! I've been reading a lot of mediocre (to awful) books lately. This is NOT one of them. )
This was a relatively easy read for me, and fell into my favorite genre of superheroes. The characters felt realistic enough and the action was well-placed. I almost didn't give this a five-star rating only for the fact that points of view sometimes shifted on me randomly. Other than tgat, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
