Murder on Astor Place A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson Books

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! In many of these types of books, the heroine - although they are described as highly intelligent - takes off helter skelter and just sort of stumbles into the solution. This heroine isn't that sort. She is intelligent and undertakes her investigation in a thoughtful, methodical way.

Murder on Astor Place A Gaslight Mystery Victoria Thompson Books Reviews

Author has a talent for weaving lively and useful description of places and people into the story in just enough quantity. I was surprised at how vivid my mental picture was of each situation.

I rolled my eyes just a tiny bit at the story 'revelations' (too much!). On the other hand, nothing is really a revelation because situations are well telegraphed, but I was just hoping the story would not go where it did go. A little over the top.

Still, I'm going to buy the next one. Found it a fun read.
This is a murder mystery that takes place during the late 1800s or Victorian time in New York City. If you like historical fictions this may be your cup of tea. The descriptions of the city with its sights and sound and smell is quite realistic and brings you back to a time when the police department was corrupt, the upper echelon of wealth was even more corrupt and powerful in the controlling of almost every aspect of society, including the police department. That is why when midwife Ms. Brandt discovered that a young, beautiful 16 year old girl was murdered under mysterious circumstances she ran into many road blocks and obstacles trying to investigate her murder with the help of a police sergeant Frank Malloy. During the investigation they uncover secrets of the well known family of the Van Damm and they also have to peruse through the underbelly of the underclass of New York City. We can also begin to understand the inequality of the sexes as we see that the roles of the women in society is seen as subservient to their male counterparts.
The story of how Ms. Brandt and Sergeant Malloy investigate the mystery is fast moving and suspenseful as they each piece together the puzzle of the young Lizzie Van Damm's murder. However, the ending of the story is somewhat abrupt and shocking. That is why I gave it a 4 star.
First of a long series of crime fiction set in New York about 1895 by Victoria Thompson.

The writing was passable and I warmed up to our protagonists, widowed midwife, Sarah Brandt and policeman, Frank Malloy, as the novel progressed. I preferred Frank to Sarah and found their acquaintanceship a bit trite.

The story held my interest as it occasionally plodded on to a very dramatic conclusion. Without spoiling, I was a bit disappointed in the solution to the crime, again feeling it was predictable.

I don't hold this type of light reading to the standard of a more serious novel and overall I was satisfied with the book. I will likely try the next book in this highly rated series as ai enjoy the era.
Set firmly in New York City 1895, this mystery tells the story of the murder of a young socialite who has run away from home. Sarah Brandt, a socialite herself who left her family after her husband's death, is working as a midwife. While attending to the routine birth of a boarding house owner's sixth child, she sees a young woman who reminds her of one of her childhood acquaintances. When she visits the mother and baby the next day, she learns that the young girl was murdered. And she meets Police Detective Frank Malloy who is investigating the crime.

Malloy is a typical cop of the time period. He's saving money so that he can pay the bribe needed to make Captain. That means he focuses more on crimes when someone is willing to pay him something extra to solve it. Off hand it doesn't look like the death of a pregnant runaway is going to add to his bribe fund.

Things get even more muddled when Sarah visits the young girl's family to find that they are more concerned about possible scandal than they are in solving the murder of the girl. Sarah investigates among society where she has an in and shares her findings with Malloy who tries to discourage her interest. When Malloy is warned off the investigation by his superiors, Sarah still continues to try to unravel the case.

I will admit that I had a pretty good idea who the father of the baby was pretty early on but the author still managed to surprise me along the way. I liked the budding relationship between Sarah and Malloy. I'm glad there are more books in this series to read.
This was a tough read at first, but I ended up liking it more than I thought I would. The author didn't give us much information for the first half of the book. Yes, she described turn of the century New York well and made the mystery interesting enough, but she handed out information about the main characters very sparingly. There was really nothing that would allow me to like or not like the main character, Sarah Brandt, or even the secondary character, Detective Sergeant Malloy, for the first half of the book. I didn't start to get a grasp on Sarah's character until about page 169, and Malloy's character until page 183. That's when my opinion of them tipped towards the positive side. The author threw in a lot of excitement at the end of the book, and I definitely did not guess the mystery (what normal person would!) until just before they did. I did find that the murderer(s) was taken care of a little too conveniently, however. The book ended up being a lot darker than I had expected which, for me, made it more likeable and believable. I expect more from these characters in the future, and I hope there will be more actual midwifery in the books to come.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! In many of these types of books, the heroine - although they are described as highly intelligent - takes off helter skelter and just sort of stumbles into the solution. This heroine isn't that sort.
