I really enjoy the stories by Laura Griffin. But I have a very big complaint (and it seems to be true of almost all of the latest authors) and that is how they write their love/sex scenes. They are very explicit, pornographic and very long,....some as long as two chapters. I have to "fast forward" through them and it's very time consuming and irritating and in my view takes away from the story line.

In reading these kind of scenes by older authors (like Danielle Steele, Dorothy Garlock, for instance, they have the ability to write these scenes in very loving ways and still get the point across.

I don't know if these newer authors are advised to be so explicit in order to write a good book. But if so, in my opinion this is very bad advice.

I hope that this author will read this and take this advice, as I enjoy her books very much otherwise.

I bought this book having read the reviews first and though had some doubts, decided to give it a try. Laura Griffin is usually a good read, well developed characters, storyline, procedural information to enhance the case. How could you go wrong? Stuck waiting in an office over many hours I had nothing to do but read and it seemed like a good enough choice. Book started out ok, lots of investigation stuff, ah, a story! There seemed to be some gaps, usually, Griffin might have been introduced to at least one of the characters in a previous book, so at least there was some clue to their character or even at least a, hey I remember you. I had to go back and look to make sure I hadn't missed something.

The story is ok, a trifle implausible but it's a novel so let's chalk that up to creative licence. They are all over the place and the eventual bad guy made but a brief appearance. Lots of information about investigating, very little plot development. The Delphi people make a vicarious guest appearance, almost as if the author felt that without them, nobody would care otherwise. As it was, even they seemed like pale descriptions of themselves.

As for the "relationship", what a trainwreck. She's got issues, he's got issues, who doesn't right? Except that in order to empathise or even connect with either character a little backstory would be welcome so that you can at least relate to their issues. The heroine is dreadful. She has the personality of a gnat. She's supposed to be all kick ass, tough cookie girl. Oh yes, did I mention, she has trust issues, she has teamwork issues, she has lots and lots of issues. The author never actually develops the character past the she's pretty, loves guns and is hot in bed, so who cares. I think we're supposed to guess she was molested by one of her airy fairy mother's deadbeat boyfriends but her whole life is glossed over in a paragraph. As for the hero, he's also pretty cookie-cutter, hits all the stereotypes, He Man macho complex. How these two end up in a relationship is beyond belief.

I'm a fan of the series and was looking forward to this one but found it to be a little disappointing. Tara & Liam start out interesting and intriguing. She is portrayed as strong, assertive and a bit cynical in that she is conscious of things like the double standard and the boys club, annoyed about token female status. we get hints of issues in her past as well. But nothing develops - her romance with Liam has no tension, no exploration, nothing its just instant. He starts out ok but ends up very one dimensional and exactly why they are together is a bit of a mystery. Its like the book has been really poorly edited or half of it is missing.

The other thing I found with this book, which I also found annoying in Twisted and a bit in Far Gone is that the story basically caves in to the very stereotype its complaining against. Tara ends up looking a bit weak (I don't mean that she was a weak character just that she ends up weak compared to where you think the story is going to go).

I think Laura Griffin books work better where the female lead is not directly in law enforcement. Although I liked Elizabeth in Beyond Limits maybe because we got to see her develop almost over 2 books and her character was not about trying to buck the stereotypes.

I'm still a fan of the series though and can't wait for the next one.
I typically love Laura Griffin and the Tracers series. The rest of the series is written quite well, but this book fell quite short of her own standard. I actually checked the book details at one point to be sure I was really reading Laura Griffin. If someone were to pick up this book as a first read of Laura Griffin, I don't know why they would pick up another.

The character development was seriously lacking. We didn't have a clear picture of the back stories of either of the main characters. There were a number of missed opportunities to tell us more about the characters and make us care about them. It seemed the book may have been missing a hundred pages (or two hundred, for that matter) explaining the characters' backgrounds and exploring why they have such amazing chemistry that caused them to fall in love. Tara seems unsure throughout the whole process as if she were brand-new to law enforcement. She is noted as being strong, but we have no idea why and she doesn't really demonstrate much strength. Her boss seemed to have something going on, influencing his decision-making, but it wasn't fully addressed. The hero was hot (of course) and in control of his world, but was mostly a bit of a know-it-all. Both of the main characters seemed to have the makings of very compelling characters, but the writing didn't hold up to this promise. Also, the story seemed to be resolved quite abruptly.

Sadly, this book just didn't do it for me. I will read the next in the series because I really enjoy Laura Griffin and the rest of the Tracers series, but I won't re-read this one.
